Breyer Foundation supports the London Borough of Havering Children Services as they transform an existing shop into ‘The Cocoon’, a young person’s space in the centre of Romford, this hub will improve life skills and offer support for children in their care, young adults including care leavers.
Breyer Foundation supplied funding for computer equipment selected by the Care Leavers themselves. One of the care leavers named the building and created the branding, whilst other Care Leavers designed the layout, attended planning meetings, selected the kitchen design and helped organise the launch. Currently the London Borough of Havering has 130 Care leavers.
Nathan Roggenbaum from Havering Social Work said “We see 9–40 young people attend the cocoon each day. The computers are being used to develop CVs, search for jobs, support with educational courses. Young people are also using the computers to support with the music group they have developed and the film project that is on-going”
