Our apprenticeships offer excellent on-site training complemented with academic study, to help provide appropriate routes for career progression. Our scheme has been endorsed by the Mayor of Lewisham, who regularly contacts apprentices to monitor their progress.
Our high standards for the apprenticeship scheme has resulted in us being shortlisted as one of London’s top three apprenticeship employers for 2013 across all industries. During this academic year Aaron constantly went beyond what was expected of him and he thoroughly deserved the 2014 ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award.
Aaron has been with Breyer Group since our contract with Lewisham Homes started. He was given responsibility for installing kitchens and bathrooms in our resident’s homes. He also volunteered to assist with the delivery of community projects such as the internal refurbishment of Home Park Youth Club (Sydenham) Oct 2013. This is a place designed by young people, for young people and has excellent facilities on offer. It received the London award winner for Royal Institute of British Architects Awards 2014.
During this project, Aaron helped transform the centre through the installation of a new kitchen (donated by Breyer Group). During the installation and redecoration, Aaron mentored volunteers from the centre in the hope that this would inspire them into thinking about a career in construction, via an apprenticeship route.
“Aaron is a pleasure to work with. He is reliable, hardworking and a quick learner. I wish more young people would follow Aaron’s example. We are working in a pressurised environment and Aaron has been tasked with helping us achieve a quick handover on this block of flats. He is working at a higher level in comparison to other apprentices currently at his stage.”
Danny Nicholls. Site Manager, March 2014
During his level 2 Apprenticeship in domestic plumbing, he became a great Ambassador for Breyer Group and for our highly commended Apprenticeship Programme. He attended numerous Career fairs in Lewisham & Tower Hamlets and spoke with potential apprentices; promoting the benefits of an apprenticeship, how it has helped him and how it is enabling him to work towards achieving his personal and career goals.
Aaron has also been identified as a mentor for new trade apprentices who are due to start during 2014/15. He has excellent interpersonal skills and his first-hand experience of being an apprentice will ensure that he will excel in this role (whilst now working towards his level 3 in plumbing).

“This apprenticeship has provided me with better training than my previous jobs. The apprenticeship programme has given me the chance to learn at college and then apply this through actual practical work.”
Aaron Barrett, Apprentice of the Year, 2014
Aaron has developed into a valuable member of the team and has worked wherever the business has needed him to. His commitment, passion and competence has resulted in him being deployed on contracts outside of the borough that are time sensitive. For example, he has been en-trusted to install two bathrooms per day with minimal supervision at Carradale House in Poplar Harca.
