As a principal contractor based in Harold Hill, Breyer Group alongside its partners Havering JOBCENTRE (JCP) and Specialist Trade Course (STC) devised the RM3 Project to improve skills and access to employment for residents.

A research study into skills and employment in Havering conducted by Renaisi identified that Harold Hill’s population is 27,262. It also revealed that:-

  • Harold Hill has very high levels of people with no qualifications (both Gooshays and Heaton wards are above London averages)
  • The employment rate was 58% (lower than Havering as a borough, 65.9%).
  • Residents from Harold Hill are more likely to be negative towards training and support opportunities, and to be cynical about the support available.

As a principal contractor based in Harold Hill, Breyer Group alongside its partners Havering JOBCENTRE (JCP) and Specialist Trade Course (STC) devised the RM3 Project to tackle the afore mentioned issues.

Eligible candidates who match the criteria for this pilot scheme are referred by Havering JCP to STC and Breyer Group. If successful the applicant embarks on a programme lasting 6 weeks which includes 3 weeks at STC where they receive Level 1 accredited training in Decorating, Tiling and Plastering. They are also given support and access to obtaining their CSCS card.

This is followed up with a 3-week work experience placement courtesy of Breyer Group’s responsive repairs division, Breyer B-Line which is designed to provide candidates with the opportunity to implement what they have learnt. Upon completion of their placement candidates are given a reference and practise interview.

The ultimate aim is produce a pipeline of work-ready trades men/women to serve the needs of Breyer Group’s work force and the wider construction industry which is as we know is facing a chronic skills shortage.

Isaac N from Harold Hill recently graduated from the RM3 project. He kept a log of his daily activities he completed during his time at Breyer Group, where he:

  • Painted and coated ceilings and walls
  • Assisted in repairing bath and showers
  • Replaced sinks and grouted kitchen tiles
  • Learnt how to fill, skim and plaster gaps

During his three-week placement with Breyer Group, Isaac had the opportunity to develop professional and technical skills, his experience and confidence. He found the tailored placement “Really helpful, interesting and practical”.
