Malkesh Lal an Ealing Homes resident first joined the company in 2008. Prior to joining Breyer Group, Malkesh contacted a range of construction companies both directly or through her local Job Centre only to discover that opportunities were not available due to her family commitments (as a young single mother with two children) and having no relevant construction experience.

During the Interview Process it was clear that she was passionate about construction and determined to succeed in gaining the necessary skills and qualifications.

The main barriers which needed to be addressed were her family commitments. Malkesh could only work from 9.30am till 4.00pm and she also needed to be based in or around Ealing so that she could take her children to and from school.

With site work starting at 7.30am and at the time very limited construction works available in Ealing we needed to be innovative and accommodating if we were going to assist Malkesh in helping her achieve career goals and minimising any impact to her family life.

Breyer provided ‘Flexi’ hours working to accommodate her family commitments, made the arrangements and enrolled Malkesh onto a course in Site Carpentry (NVQ Level 2) – and have been placing her on sites which match her course and personal life commitments.
Breyer Group also supported Malkesh whilst she worked towards an NVQ Level 3 in Site Supervision. Taking this into account and her existing Carpentry experience, she was provided with a new role as an Assistant Site Manager, a clear testimony to her determination and a significant contribution to our workforce

Her progression has still remained and Malkesh is working towards gaining valuable experience within our Customer Sales Team, Reactive Maintenance (B-Line) where natural progression would point towards to a Team Leader position in the future

We hope that Malkesh’s story will help inspire others, particularly those candidates from under represented groups, who like Malkesh have various obstacles to overcome – but hopefully this case study will demonstrate that anything is possible.
